Edmonton (CANADA) The city, which is approximately 100 years old, has a population of about 900,000 and covers 700 sq. Km. In the 1980s the City Council set up a group to liaise with the different public and private bodies concerned, including wheel-chair users and the aurally and visually impaired. Every year this group checks the policies and strategies for the disabled, ensuring that programmes and installations in public spaces and buildings are carried out correctly. PEDWAY SYSTEM: This is a map for disabled users in the downtown area. The map covers 48 blocks and includes 800 places in the city centre, such as hotels, offices, shops or public spaces. The map defines the level of accessibility in each place and each one’s exact location in relation to the pedestrian walkway, lifts and ramps. All accessible buildings have automatic doors. |
