The population is about 1,900,000. The city is approximately 300 years old and has 8 large regions and over 70 neighbourhoods.
The IPPUC (Curitiba Institute of Town Planning) was set up around 35 years ago and has achieved incredible results, transforming a typical Latin American city into one of the best exemples in the world of accessibility for the disabled in public spaces and of environmental conservation based on sustainability.On the initiative of the IPPUC, in which the architect Jaime Lerner is an active participant, the precarious industrial fabric of Curitiba includes major motor companies from the United States of America, Germany, France and Sweden: Chrysler, Audi, BMW, Renault and Volvo, respectively.
The Curitiba bus network is fully integrated and accessible. The different types include regular services and specific routes for handicapped students, hospital patients and tourists. One can carry 270 passengers per bus, in its own bus lane, at a maximum speed of 60 km. per hour.
